The following photographs provide a fair representation of what was happening from March 20 to April 1, 2003 on the streets of New York City regarding the imminent war with Iraq. All entrances to Manhattan are guarded by two or more police cars and all trucks and vans are stopped and searched. The New York National Guard has been ordered deployed by Governor Pataki to all major subway and train stations. The governor has deputized the members of the National Guard so that technically, they are a police force rather than a military force. The ant-war movement seems to be far more vocal and prevalent then the pro-war movement. In one march from 42 Street down to Washington Square Park, the crowds were estimated in size from 125,000 (NYPD estimate) to over 200,000 (march organizers estimate). On March 12, a small group of 6 Pro-war supporters were observed in Washington Square Park. Nevertheless, an informal survey of people on the street indicated that approximately 20 percent were in favor of a war with Iraq, though it should be pointed out that larger published TV surveys estimated that the percentage of people favoring war with Iraq ranged from 60 to 70 percent.
